KRename - App of the Month

KRename - a short overview

KRename is an typical example for an application everbody needs and only a few knows. It is not so effective in media like amaroK or Kontact.

Many distributions have krename already on board. Latest release and suitable rpms for SuSE and Fedora can be found on the KRename download page. Current version is 3.0.11.

For the documentation, Dominik cut his own path and created an extensive PDF file. This is available in four languages (English, Russian, French and German). Source is an OpenOffice document. It can be found on the KRename documentation page and can easily be translated to another language.

Introduction

At the first start, KRename welcomes you with a small window. You are asked about your skills. Are you a beginner, who wants to use a wizard, or a advanced user. We recommend to you to use the wizard for the first time.

Procedure

Three steps need to be completed.

  1. Add the files you wish to rename.
  2. Adjust the settings to define the name changes.
A real time preview shows you the prospective result.
  3. Files are renamed and a result overview is displayed.

Example

The best way to describe an application like krename is to show an example.

We will sort your picture collection in beginners mode.

Pictures taken with a digital camera mostly have ugly names like "000_0003.JPG". Now we like to give them new names using krename. The new filename should look like: "NUMBER holiday CURRENTDATE.jpg". NUMBER and CURRENTDATE will be replaced.

Add your pictures:

Next step is to select the rename option.

The following screenshot shows you how to set all the options. First we set "Number" as prefix. Suffix should be "Date". Select "Custom name " at name and enter " holiday " as value. Extension should be lowercase, so select "Custom extension" and enter "jpg". Maybe you like to increment no. of digits to get "01" instead of a naked "1". It looks better if you have more than 10 pictures. In advanced user mode you would enter "## holiday [date]" to get the same result.

One click more and your pictures are renamed. The results page gives you a lot of useful information and offers you to rename the files again or to undo renaming.
